GIVING THANKS ... AN INCREDIBLE EARTHLY ANGEL ...

Happy Friday all.

With Thanksgiving SO close ... only a few weeks away ...  I can't help but feel thankful for all the blessings in my life. My health, close friends, extended family, AND all of you! As my blog title emphasizes "In Time ...," I truly believe timing is everything. At pivotal times in my life someone has ALWAYS been there for me, which leads me to today's post.

Last week I had been visiting Morgan Shamy's blog, a WONDERFUL and SPECIAL person, so if you don't know her, drop by her blog and say Hi. As I read her post, my jaw slightly dropped and a smile formed on my lips ... "YES!" I thought ... "The PERFECT Thanksgiving EARTHLY ANGELS story.

For those of you who are not familiar with my EA posts, let me explain. During the blizzard of 2010, I had read an amazing story of a woman who had drove through "Thunder snow" for thirty miles to rescue her sister as well as a few other stranded strangers. This woman was an Earthly Angel. These AMAZING people are selfless, caring, and ask for nothing in return. One might also call them a good Samaritan, but for me these people were sent by God. Many enter our lives for one brief moment and then disappear. This is the case with Morgan's story. Let her tell you in her own words....

"Eight years ago hubs and I went to Iceland. We landed at 1:00 in the morning, with nothing but the packs on our backs and a Reykjavik stamp in our passports. We didn’t have a place to stay, with only a few dollars in our pockets. We had been herded out of the airport without any transportation and were left outside in the freezing temperatures with the nearest hotel being $400 a night.

To put it mildly, we felt like Tom Hanks after his Fedex airplane crashed. Stranded, and castaway.

There we were, standing in the cold considering our options, when a man with a duffel bag asked us if we needed a ride. Being young and naïve, we responded yes, we did, but that we didn’t know where because we didn’t have a place to stay. He then offered his place, but said it was a drive. The hubs immediately said, “Yes, that would be great!” while I was elbowing him in the side, totally not wanting to go off into the car with this guy in this strange country in the middle of the night to his house.  Honestly, the man could’ve had a body in that duffel.

But we went.

We piled into his white van with tinted windows (I mean, come on!) and headed off into the night.

Conversation was fine until he started talking about guns. All the while I’m trying to memorize the pitch-dark snowy landscape outside in case we'd have to bolt and run for our lives. Then we pulled up to this high security compound with a barbed wire fence and guards holding rifles.

Our guide, Brent, was actually a military helicopter pilot and “his place” was a little apartment in the American military base. He was amazing. He let us have his bed and gave us his car to drive for the week. All for free. He was our angel. I honestly don’t know what we would have done without his help. To this day, hubs and I are trying to locate him and thank him again. What could've been a nightmare turned out to be one of our favorite weeks of our lives."

Thank you, Morgan for this most incredible story. How about you? Have you ever encountered one of these mysteriously wonderful people? If so, PLEASE tell us your story in the comments or email me directly. I would LOVE to feature yours.

I believe we all have the power to be an EA, so if you see a person in need, don't hesitate to lend a hand, we all have the gift for compassion and caring. Let's make our world a better place to live. After all, "Tis the season ...."

Have a great weekend everyone.

That is an amazing story. I would've been worried as well. But what better place than the safety of a base?

Oh how sweet! I hope she finds him one day.

Amen to this! I've known many earthly angels and I've been on a time or two. It's the most fantastic experience to be on both ends, however, BEING the EA is what I love the best. This is the perfect time of year to pause and reflect on this!

Michael, thanks for sharing this story! First, I LOVE Morgan Shamy too. :)
And, yes, I too believe in earthly angels. I have a friend who certainly is one. Her story is similar to Morgan's except she and her husband were on the giving end. They met a young man on an airplane one evening. The man was on "holiday," just traveling the globe. His next stop was the Midwest. My friend and her husband told him that hotels were too expensive in their neck of the woods so they offered him their spare bedroom. We all told her she was NUTS! But that's the kind of person she is. She never feared that this young man would harm her, her husband, or their young daughter. She simply wanted the young man to enjoy his "holiday" in the Midwest, free of charge.

Oh, great story! I have heard a lot of world traveling friends talk about the generosity of people in other places. A lot of the world just sees hospitality as one of those things that enriches lives. I wish we were more like that.

I think YOU are an EA, Michael! Goodness just oozes from your heart, through your blog, your words, and the screen. Certain people just have an extra light around them, and you are one of those people. :-)

Thanks for retelling my story. I sincerely hope we get to find Brent again someday and say thanks. I'm sure he's done amazing things! You are fantastic. Thanks for this. :)

I've encountered Morgan in this blogosphere numerous times and yes, she is a SPECIAL person.

Morgan's story is touching, friendships can be valuable no matter how serious you take them. You gotta appreciate them to their fullest and seize those moments when you CANNOT. Time is truly precious!

Great post, Michael! Have a great weekend! :)

What an amazing story. I can imagine how terrified she was. Something similar happened to my husband and me when we were back packing through Europe, but it was my husband who was elbowing me to bolt. We ended up bolting so I will never know what would have happened. It is so hard in today's world to trust kind offers from strangers and that makes me really sad.

Well, gads, this just warmed my heart. I have a few stories like this, but they'd take too long, so maybe a story for another day. I just wanted to say that the world is full of angels. If you're looking for them, they're actually quite easy to spot. Thanks, Michael. Your blog is an inspiration.

Great story Michael! My first thought was, "Who goes to Iceland with no money and no plan?!"...but I guess they were young and adventerous, and who hasn't been that at some point? I'm glad it all worked out for them.
You're so right about helping others! We all have the capability to do some good for someone else, and it's a beautiful thing when it all works out.

Morgan is an earthly angel of extraordinary virtue. She organizes potlucks and get togethers for writers here. I haven't been able to go to the last two that I've heard because of familial obligations, but should she organize one outside of one, I'm totally there!

What an amazing, incredible story. Thanks for sharing it.

I'm thankful for all the angles who've helped me along the way. Cyber angels are still Earth Angels, I think.

I've only recently "met" Morgan and can already tell what a wonderful little spark of light she is. Hmm, I think I'll go visit her right now.

This is a lovely feature, Michael & I'm glad to see you're keeping it up.

Man, if today is any indication, we are NOT going to get the sweet winter we had last year.

Such a lovely story - and thank goodness it had that ending- it could have had a few much darker twists in there!
