GENRE FAVORITES ... A BLOGFEST...

Hi, Everyone,

Well, today is Alex J. Cavanaugh's GENRE FAVORITE'S BLOGFEST.... YAY! Gotta love Alex and his blogfests! Enter here:

List your favorite genre of:

Movie

Books

Music

And a guilty pleasure genre from any category.

How fun is this? Right? Well, come and join in the fun!

Can you imagine all the AMAZING possibilities?

As for me, I has such VARIED tastes, but I will certainly give you my favs ...

Movies are tough. I LOVE so many different types of movies and from all different eras. How could you not love the amazing dramas from the 1940's: the toe-tapping musicals of the 1950's; the screwball comedies of the 1960's; the never-ending mini-series in the 1970's; the "brat-pack" films of the 1980's; etc.

So how is one to choose? But, if I must, I would have to say that I really do adore Fantasy movies. My first love .... THE WIZARD OF OZ ... and then of course the first Harry Potter film: HARRY POTTER and the SORCERER'S STONE.

Books, again are impossible to choose. But I always have loved Nineteenth Century English literature. Dickens, the Bronte' sisters, Austen. Intense Dramas of daily life at that time: the social structure and the powerful, yet downtrodden women.

And then FANTASY! LOVE IT! All kinds, but just two authors. ROWLINGS and BROOKS. My total FAVS!

Ah, now for music. I am so in love with music. I LOVE IT ALL, except for the heavy metal stuff. Sorry Alex. Classical, instrumental, and strings are my all time favs. But I do enjoy beautiful voices and pop music. Again varied tastes.

If I must pic a guilty pleasure .... I really do hate to admit this, but there is one particular genre that I always enjoy watching in movies, yet it's not my favorite to read. I am such a sucker for Romantic comedies and CHRISTMAS FILMS! Give me a Christmas Romantic Comedy and I am in HEAVEN. So much from my macho image. LOL.

Perhaps that is why my posts for Romantic Friday Writers are so well received. I generally don't write Romance, but my blogger friends are raving about them. LOL.

Now that I have revealed my darkest secrets, do tell me YOURS! What are your favs and guilty pleasures. And no I don't mean anything CHOCOLATE, but I can so relate.

Have a great Monday everyone! And for my blogger buddies who enjoy the health and fitness posts, I had postponed Morgan Shamy's helpful tips until Wednesday. I hope you will drop by then and read how she stays in tip top shape ...

Since you went with fantasy for your first two choices, I'll forgive you for not liking the heavy metal!
Yeah, I sacrificed my male image with romantic comedies as well.
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!

Yolanda Renée said...

Lots of romance among writers. Love that! But I will admit, my hubby is the same way. Nothing better than a good romantic comedy on a cold winters day. Between football games of course.

Great choices, Michael. Sounds like you're open to most genres. That can be inspiring, especially while writing.

Dude,

I already lost my ManCard (when I messed up the meaning of this Blogfest!!) so I will share a Rom Com truth:

My wife and I watch "Love Actually" twice a year (July and Dec.) and I *bawl* worse than she ever does :)

'Sall Good.... How 'bout dem Cowboys, heh... :)

Marta Szemik said...

I love Fantasy! There's something special about getting lost in a different world.

Summer Ross said...

Christmas films! That's awesome! Thank you for sharing.

Roland D. Yeomans said...

How could you not love fantasy, right? :-) And your ManCard is safe. Only the most secure man can state what his true favorites are and let the chips fall where they may! Christmas films are among the very best to watch when they are done right, Roland

We watch A Muppet Christmas Carol every Christmas Eve.

Nicki Elson said...

I think it's so funny that the girls are proudly picking Rom Com for their Favorite and the guys leave it for their guilty pleasure!

how can you love it all if metal is not in the mix? some metal... maybe?

I've never been a huge fan of fantasy, but with so many bloggers choosing it as their favourite, maybe I need to read some more. Cool choices!

Michael Offutt, Phantom Reader said...

You should write a Christmas book, Michael. I've also gotten to like them, but I think it's very challenging to come up with an idea in that genre that hasn't been done before. Christmas has thus far, never failed to provide a movie that seems to take a new twist on Santa Claus and the elves. I'm sure there are more undiscovered goodies in the human imagination.

LTM said...

oh my gosh, I'm the same way. I love all kinds of movies. And I just love the experience of going to the movies, so there's that as well. But yes, the Potter films, TWOO... music, I'm about the same way. Book, romance-any sub-genre works for me. So Fantasy, 19th century. Yep!

Christmas films!!! Yay!!! :D Love that. Hope you're doing great, BB! ((LB hugs))

mooderino said...

I'm always a sucker for romcoms where the girl and guy detest each other at the start and then by the end love each other. Classic B&W or 3D in Imax, just can't resist that old chestnut.

Hi Michael,
I love the holiday season and the movies that arrive~ So endearing!
Great choices...love the Wizard of Oz!!! :D

Kyra Lennon said...

Oh, you totally rock! I didn't think until you pointed it out that I'd listed Christmas Rom Coms, but they are usually pretty good! :D

I love all of your movie choices - and you get extra cool points for being a Harry Potter fan!

Hello Beautiful!

Well, guilty pleasures, movies? I love a good drama, Last of the Mohicans, is a fav - always watch with a box of tissues. And yesterday, Steel Magnolias was on, I SO cried at the end. Again. Also, love the 80s movies, Pretty in Pink, St Elmos, - and anything with James Spader in it. (sad I know). Sci-fi - I LOVED Gattaca! Also, Bladerunner. And gosh, so much more, I could go on...

We will have to add popcorn and margarita night to our list of things to do!!

Hope you are well!

Christmas and rom com is a step too far for me! If it's Christmas, it's got to have elves in it... and there aren't any elvish rom coms! :-)

Thanks for following my blog!

Emily R. King said...

How about romantic comedies that ARE Christmas films? I love the combo, like Love Actually. I watch them every year!

Morgan said...

CHRISTMAS FILMS?!?!?!? <---Ah-hahaha!!!! I'm totally not laughing... I promise... *wipes tear* That is the coolest guilty pleasure I've read ALL DAY...

And MICHAEL... if those are your darkest secrets, I think you're pretty well off :)

And we have a couple of similar genres! :D

RaveAir said...

I forgive you the pun comment in my blog because you love the fantasy genre. But the Chrismas films? Too much sugar to me.

jaybird said...

Hi Michael- I'm popping in from Alex's blog fest, and I love your site! It's fabulous.

I am a huge fan of diversity, and had a real hard time narrowing down my favorites as well. The Wizard of Oz is a classic, and any time I'm feeling blue, I love to read or watch Pride & Prejudice. (The Colin Firth version of course!)

Linda Gray said...

I love it that so many guys are admitting to loving romantic comedies! I do, too. But I'm a little concerned how many of you guys also have fantasy as your top choice . . . hmmm, what does this say about how guys see romance??

mshatch said...

I agree on the Christmas Films; there are some great ones both new and old. Home Alone can still make me laugh along with Elf (it's so stupid it's funny) and It's a Wonderful Life goes without saying.

Unknown said...

Nineteenth Century English Lit? Now that's a first. Most guys (and one girl, me) have to be tied down and have it read to them.

I'm with you on the Christmas films. I could watch them year round.

Shah Wharton said...

Oh now I totally forgot about Christmas movies - I LOVE THEM! I may have to ammend my list :) I loved Holiday (Jude Law and Cameron Diaz - gorgeous movie) and most Scrooge adaptions and of course - The Grinch!! only around 100 days till Christmas btw :D

And although I like rock, I do not like heavy metal either. x

Aldrea Alien said...

Wow, it's been ages since I watched The Wizard of Oz.
I still need to watch the last two Harry Potter's too. I'll have to watch the previous ones again though ... you know, to get back into the potter swing of things. ^_^

Brinda said...

Should I tell you that I've seen The Wizard of Oz at least 100 times. I even ended up owning cairn terriers where I could have my own "Toto" to love.

Heather Murphy said...

I like that you were man enough to own up to liking romantic comedies :)
You have such a variety of interests that it just makes you more rounded

Johanna Garth said...

I feel like we're soul mates with your 19th century literature love. ME TOO, ME TOO, ME TOO!

Jemi Fraser said...

Love so many of your answers!!! I love romantic comedies and Xmas films too - White Christmas with Bing and the gang is such a classic! :)

And, no worries, real men have feelings, love a good romance and aren't afraid to show it!

Trisha said...

With metal, you might be surprised at how melodic it can sometimes be :) I have an album by Opeth and one of the songs doesn't even sound like metal. ;)

Personally I just laugh at the extreme metal that has a beat I can't even follow, so maybe that's the stuff you're thinking of.

Love your answers anyway :)

As a Brooks fan you must be excited about the TV show? :D

Bish Denham said...

These are great! It's nice to know there's a male out there who likes Christmas romantic comedies. What, indeed, could be better?

Danette said...

Also so much energy! how do you keep up with all the blogfests? I am doing one next month but I doubt I will do much blog hopping (oops! Shush don't tell anyone. I just have some posts planned but I know I won't have time to visit many people- other than my favs. Like you!) Cheers Michael!

Jay Paoloni said...

Hmm, not sure our tastes match.
But glad to see you're participating too!
See you around!

Susan Oloier said...

Yes! Christmas films. How could I forget those. I love them, too. Along with romantic comedies.

farawayeyes said...

Christmas films, I didn't even think of that, but one of my favorite movies is 'Mixed Nuts' a Christmas Rom/Com of a different color.

Tamara said...

I love your list. Great choices. I read almost the whole Wizard of Oz series when I was a kid. there wasn't nearly as much stuff with magic in it then as there is now. Whenever I found a book with magic I was in heaven. Narnia. Oz. The Half Magic books. Great stuff.

When Harry Potter came out I was in heaven. Then, a few years later, it was followed by this explosion of YA books...half of them with both magic and romance, my two favorite things. Now I'm just doing a happy dance ever day. haha.

And Christmas movies are the best. we watch them over and over, the same ones every year and they never get old. One of my favorites is "The Ref" Dennis Leary. Hilarious movie.

It's nice to meet you!

I have to admit, I kinda like RomCom movies, but rarely like same in novels. And I'm so glad you put Terry Brooks as one of your Fantasy faves. He's one of my first loves too, although Anne McCaffrey introduced me to the genre.

Have a good week Michael.

Awesome choices! I totally dig your taste in music!

And who doesn't enjoy a heartwarming Christmas rom-com at the right time of the year?

Unknown said...

Yeah, I forgot the old Christmas flicks too, I must admit I do enjoy sitting around watching those!

Ah, a romantic at heart. I loved the list by decade...you made me want to go back to my post and add more that I'd forgotten about!

Denise Covey said...

It looks like you had such a hard time making decisions here Michael. Not easy, is it? But I think RomComs have won the day! And thank you for the little shout out for RomanticFridayWriters! I hope you can enter this Friday! Your entries are so good!!!!!!

Hey, Michael!! :) Your guilty pleasure isn't so bad ~ I LOVE Christmas, period! White Christmas is a favorite classic movie of mine.

I'm with you on fantasy as my favorite book genre.

Hope all's been well for you? I dropped off the face of the blogosphere for a few months, but hoping to get back into the swing of things ~ :)

Oh my! I love The Wizard of Oz. My dad used to call us from our rooms when we were little so we could watch it every spring when it aired. (He'd also call us from our rooms to change channels for him on the old Curtis Mathis...before the days of remotes. LOL)

And woohoo for romance! A little romance makes anything better. ;)

Thanks for visiting my blog. Glad to have a new follower. :)

Oh my goodness! Christmas movies? I have do many, that we have to start watching them the first day of November to get them all in before Christmas day. And that's watching one Christmas movie EVERY night. Oh! I should have put that in my my guilty pleasures list. Well, I've got a couple if wards I need to post that were given to be last week. They all involve talking about yourself, so this will BE ON MY LIST IN ONE OF THESE AWARDS!

I like your choices but if you like screwball comedies, you should check out some of the great ones from the 30's and 40's. Have you ever seen Bringing Up Baby with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Classic.

E. M. Prokop said...

Hi Michael! I love your choices, especially the Wizard of Oz! I realized that I forgot to put that on my list..also, I love 19th century literature, but I tend to be more drawn to the Russians...Anton Chekov is my all time favourite writer..and most classical music as well as pop (it's my current fave genre)..it's good to see a guy admit that he likes romantic comedies!

Thanks for stopping by my blog for the blogfest. This has been so much fun.

I like Christmas movies, too. My favorite is "It's a Wonderful Life." I saw the radio show mounted on stage at a local theatre and I would love to do it at the community theatre here in my small town.

I had trouble choosing my favorites as well. It's touch when we have eclectic tastes and can never get enough of the things we enjoy.

Thanks for dropping by my blog during the blogfest, Michael. I like the interesting mix of blog posts here.

I just can't shut up said...

I'm still missing the world of Harry Potter. A guilty admission, it took me a year at least to work out the name Diagon Alley....was diagonally. It wasn't until I said it aloud rapidly that it clicked. BTW, see you listed Chicago. I used to be a tour guide there. My Bff still lives there.
