A GUIDING LIGHT?...

Streaks of bright, amber light rifts the midnight blue sky and Herald shield’s his eyes with a gauntleted forearm.

The intensity wavers and Herald peers to the heavens. His parched mouth hangs open as gossamer wings glide on the wind gently caressing the angelic being.

Sweat breaks out on his face and an arctic shiver races through his body. He stares intently at her incredible beauty as all thoughts of his family fade from this breathtaking spectacle.

Herald shakes his head and comes to his senses.

“What is it that you wish of me?” he asks, brushing the sweat from his brow.

“I seek your protection.” Her voices strums a thousand harp strings, resonating through his core.

“But why? You are of another world. An advanced one. and I…” He swallows hard. “…I am a mere mortal.”

She pursers her rosy lips. “You shall do as I ask or suffer the consequences.”

He lowers his head. “As you wish, but I have failed at this task before. I have already lost my twin and my remaining siblings need my protection. I cannot let anything happen to them.”

She remains silent…

Family and blood. Family and blood. Repeats through Herald’s mind.

Who is this ethereal beauty?

Is she a danger to him?

YOU GOTTA HAVE FATE...

Mystery and intrigue sums up Trip Coulter.

Who’s Trip Coulter you ask?

Ah…

Now there’s a story…

A mere twenty-four hours ago he quit his tech job. What’s a guy to do next?

What else…

Sign up as a black ops…Spy work is so much cooler.

Enter Olivia…

Heads turn as her hips sway like palm fronds in a delicate breeze. The six inch stilettos click out a latin beat heading toward the shadowed corner table.

Trip’s eyes follow and brighten as she melts into the vacant seat.

“What a day. Traffic all over town and idiots on the road.” She glances the table. “Didn’t you order me a drink? You could’ve at least done that.”

“I didn’t know when you’d get here.”

“I told you by 7 o’clock. Don’t you listen.”

“Yes. And it’s half past…you’re late.”

She roles her eyes. “Whatever.”

Trip keeps his cool. After dinner he heads home…alone.

The next morning, another lady graces the scene. Like clockwork Jane arrives at Trip’s apartment ready to do what she does best. Clean and hope Trip will finally notice her.

Jane enters and heads straight for the kitchen to wash the left over dishes and put on a pot of coffee.

Trip, still in his bedroom, lies still. His eyes blink open to freshly ground aroma of hazelnut coffee.

His nose twitches and his lanky frame stretches to the edge. Just like any other day he drags himself out of bed, throws on a pair of sweats, hits the bathroom, and then enters his office, sitting at his computer.

A moment later Jane sets a cup of coffee next to him and steps into the adjacent bedroom. “Thanks,” he grunts.

He takes a gulp and someone pounds on the front door.

“I’ll get it,” Jane calls out.

Trip continues to work.

She unlocks the door and Olivia barges in. “Get out of my way, maid.”

“You can’t disturb Mr. Coulter while he’s working.”

“I said, get out of my way!” She pushes Jane to the side.

Jane grabs her arm. “You mustn’t.”

“Back off you low-life servant.”

“That’s enough!” Trip growls as he races into the living room.

“How dare you raise your voice to me.”

“Olivia. Apologize to Jane.”

“Fat chance. I never apologize to anyone.” She turns toward Jane. “Especially not to cretans.”

“That’s it. Get out, Olivia. We’re through.”

He takes her by the arm and escorts her to the door. She digs her heels into the carpet, slaps his face, and heads out, slamming the door behind her.

Trip’s face carries a hint of red as he apologies to Jane.

Both hearts beat a little faster.

Both have secrets to be discovered…

Jane is no ordinary maid…

A DEADLY DECEPTION...

Wisps of blue heather slowly whirl into sight, creating beauty, creating horror.

Two people.

One child.

One brave man. A slave.

Another…watching the scene.

The child’s eyes beam in wonder…in freight.

The mists glide and reforms into an alluring
diaphanous being.

The Hunger shifts closer to the child, beckoning him. Enticing him to step closer. Bewitching him to his death.

The slaves muscled arm retrains the child.

The Hunger laughs. Fueled by the shadows of the greater Her.

“You cannot restrain me, Slave. I am here to collect your souls.” A laugh like pitted slate grinding against itself echoes through the room.

“No, but I can!” A large figure steps out of the shadows and the ungloved hand of Captain Samuel McCord grips the icy throat of the seductive being. It writhes in pain, fighting to break free.

“What are you?” She gaps.

“Pissed mostly,” McCord says in a raspy tone.

“Kill the monster, Captain Sam,” exclaims little Sammy Clemens.

“Do it. Kill me. End my existence.”

McCord releases his grip just enough to keep hold. “Do you not wish for mercy?”

“Mercy…is ending me.”

The child pleads for the kill, but instead the captain withdraws his hold.

In releasing HER, she is free to kill again…

Who will be her next victim?

Will Captain Sam McCord save the day once more…

CARAVANNING THROUGH THE OLDE WEST...

Images of the perfect marriage and home in the new west dance through Rebecca’s mind.

Imagine. California. No more harsh winters. No more struggling. A dream come true.

She finishes packing her meager belongings and races to the covered wagon, placing them inside, excited and scared all at the same time. She pulls back an escaped lock of golden hair and sighs.

I’m ready.

*     *     *     *     *      *      *      *

Days turn into weeks as she and her family caravan through the vast, unsettled lands of America. With only dreams of wedlock sustaining her through this perilous journey, Rebecca longs for the day when she meets her betrothed.

As they enter New Mexico a fight breaks out.

In all the commotion, Rebecca is left behind.

Alone. Stripped of all civilization, she frantically searches for food, shelter, and water in a barren, sandy wasteland.

With the sun beating down upon her, she wanders helplessly, her mind unfocused and delirious, playing tricks on her. For two days and nights she manages to survive.

At daybreak her mind plays another cruel trick and she imagines a dusty figure on horseback fading in and out on the horizon. Blinking her eyes, Rebecca forces them to focus.

She shakes her head and whispers, “It can’t be.”

A tear escapes, trailing down a crease in her cheek.

It can’t be real.

I’m alone. My life is over.

Dropping onto a rock, salty tears flow into her chapped hands, stinging them. She raises her head and watches the mysterious image move closer.

Life is so cruel and unjust.

A dizziness whirls through Rebecca’s head. She hears a deep, raspy voice call out, “Maam. Are you alright?”

As she fades into darkness, her last thought drifts through her semiconscious mind…

Now I’m hearing things.

*     *     *     *     *      *      *      *

Cool water soaks her parched lips. Rebecca’s crusted eyes blink open and locks them on the stranger. Tiny lines crinkle the corners of his golden eyes as he smiles.

“Ma’am. I thought I lost you there for a minute.” He smiles again. “What are you doing out here in this God forsaken place all alone?”

Rebecca gulps down water from his leather canteen, licks her lips, and stares at the stranger.

“I wish I knew. But here I am and here I’ll stay.”

His smile fades and his heavy brows furrow. “Ma’am. You can’t mean that. If you don’t die of dehydration or starvation, a rattler will get you for sure.”

“I can take care of myself.”

He laughs. “I can see that.”

“Don’t mock me, Sir.”

“Sir? I’m no Sir…I’m Seth. And your name, Ma’am?”

“What difference does it make now? But, if you must know, it’s Rebecca.”

He beams. “Well it does if we’ll be traveling together.”

Rebecca glares at him. “What on earth makes you think that?”

Seth brushes the sweat off his brow. “Because i’m not leaving you here for vulture food.”

What will happen to Seth and Rebecca on their risky journey westward?

Will they give into their growing attraction, each healing the other’s love-starved soul along the way?

Or will Rebecca honor her commitment to her betrothed in California?

BOUND FOR THE SUBLIME AND UNEXPECTED...

A new term begins at Newstead High School.

Steven Raynor, one of the chosen 133, lumbers down the dimly lit corridor to his dorm room. Thoughts rumble through his mind.

I’ve managed to do it for two years. But how can I keep it up for another year? I was lucky…but will I remain so?

He flings open the door…

No, not him! Not Marcus!

Marcus looks up, grinning.

“Well, if it isn’t, Raynor. You’re my new roomy?”

He wiggles his hairless eyebrows and steps toward the window, opening it. Sunlight bounces off his mottled, gray face and accentuates each and every bump on his head.

“Looks like you can use a breath of fresh air,” Marcus snickers, glancing toward me. “This works out great. I’m in need of a new wing giant. Prepare yourself for one uproarious year!”

Words elude me. I gurgle something incomprehensible.

My lucks just ran out.

Will Steven continue to remain in the shadows and keep his secrets hidden?

Or will Marcus force him into the limelight, exposing him to the traitor he really is?

The stakes are high in the world of the 133…

Tomorrow’s rulers…

Tomorrow’s dictators…

Tomorrow’s gods…

AN AMAZING ADVENTURE! ...

Winds swirl through the miles of oiled flax sails as the Ashanti of West Africa boards an eastward bound ship along with a mischievous eight-legged creature.

After a treacherous two month journey across the Atlantic’s middle passage, the turquoise waters of the Caribbean shines brilliantly in the early morning sunlight.

Hidden in the folds of the highest mast’s sails, an intricate web still remains in tact. Elegantly twisting on a fine, silken thread, Anansi lands on the shoulder of the Ashanti and begins his new life on the mystical island of Jamaica.

Each day a new adventure…

A new lesson to be learned…

How do you escape a hungry tiger?

Why did goats smell so bad?

What happens if you get too greedy?

The Ashanti’s liquid voice answers these questions by weaving his spell over his oppressed and enslaved people, captivating them with tales of the trickster, Anansi, who dances and sings with joy when he wins, and when he loses…

Shakes it off and keeps on living…

Anansi won their hearts…

Get ready to lose yours.
